اشتهر المعتصم العباسي باسم (المثمن) لأن الرقم 8 لعب دوراً هاماً في حياته،فهو ثامن الخلفاء العباسيين، ودامت خلافته ثماني سنوات،وثمانيةشهور، وشهدعهده ثماني فتوحات عسكرية، وترك من الأولاد 8 أولاد، 8بنات، وكانت ولادته عام 108هـ في الشهر الثامن من السنة (شعبان(وتوفي وله من العمر 48 سنة.
